beginner's guide to the internet
basic elements explained
domain names

Everything starts with a domain name (yourcompanyname.co.uk or yourcompanyname.com etc) which works like an electronic postbox number.

The domain name is stored on a “name server”, which is a computer permanently attached to the internet.

When someone tries to find a web page containing the domain name a “where is it?” message goes to the name server and the search routes through to the right computer – anywhere in the world.

The domain name is the bit immediately after the www in a website address and the bit before the @ in an email address.

The end bit of the domain (after the dot) shows which country the domain was registered in and (possibly) what type of organisation it is.

(.org is normally a non-profit organisation - .gov is government - .co.uk is the common UK registration - .ltd.uk is a UK limited company - .com is an international [actually American] registration)

Duport Associates does more than supply domain names - we manage the name(s) for you and set up email addresses.

We register UK domains -

  • .co.uk
  • .ltd.uk
  • .org.uk

International domains -

  • .com
  • .org
  • .net
  • .biz
