beginner's guide to the internet
basic elements explained
browsers and email programs

Whether you own a domain name or not, you already have some kind of browser... if not, you would not be able to see this page.

The program that makes it possible to view web pages (e.g. Internet Explorer) is called a 'browser'.

You can also view emails in a browser, and that is the normal way to access emails if you use a web-based email service such as Yahoo or Hotmail.

However, the majority of business users view and create their email in an email program.

Your email program (e.g. Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, PocoMail etc) collects emails from your mail server and enables you to create messages offline and send them when you are ready.

If you purchase a domain and email address(es) you need to set the addresses up in your email program.

Space does not permit us to describe how this can be done in each program type.

Outlook Express users who have purchased 'alias' email addresses may benefit from a free tutorial set up by one of our own staff.
